How to properly install and maintain marine bollards?

Correct Installation Procedures for 100 KN T‑Head Marine Bollard

 

Improper installation is one of the top causes for bollard premature failure. Operators shall strictly follow steps below:

 

1. Pre‑installation Inspection & Preparation

Inspect cast‑steel body for casting cracks, blow‑holes and deformation. Verify the 100 KN marking. The quay beam concrete must achieve strength grade ≥C35, with flat mounting surface free of honeycombing or cracks. Mark anchor bolt positions according to drawing. Prepare soft lifting slings, calibrated torque wrench and spirit level.

2. Lifting and Positioning

Use synthetic soft slings for hoisting. Steel wire rope shall not contact sharp cast‑steel edges to avoid surface damage. Lower the bollard into position, align flange holes with embedded anchor bolts. The entire flange base shall fully rest on concrete substrate. Partial suspension or thin shims for local levelling are strictly forbidden**. Level the unit and ensure bollard column stands perfectly vertical.

3. Bolt Tightening

Fit flat washers and spring washers, assemble nuts. Tighten anchor nuts diagonally in multiple incremental passes, do NOT fully tighten one‑side first. Keep 2‑3 complete thread pitches exposed above nut top surface. Never substitute specified high‑strength anchor bolts with ordinary carbon‑steel fasteners.

4. Installation Acceptance Check

Confirm full‑area contact between flange and concrete without rocking. Verify vertical alignment, correct bolt torque and zero impact damage on cast‑steel body.

 

Critical warning: Do not force misaligned bolt holes, which will introduce hidden pre‑stress inside flange and lead to later fracture. Tilting installation creates eccentric load and greatly raises failure risk.

 

 Operation Guidelines

 

This bollard is designed for 100 kN maximum safe working load (MSWL) horizontal mooring tension only.

 

Mooring ropes shall sit on curved T‑head working surface; never hitch ropes around flange base, nuts or bolts.

Minimize upward oblique pull which generates uplift force component. Sudden jerking, shock impact load must be avoided.

Welding, flame cutting or heavy hammer striking on bollard body are prohibited; heat will degrade cast‑steel material and trigger fatigue cracks.

 

Maintenance Recommendations

1.Weekly visual inspection: Check body cracks, nut loosening, gaps between base flange and quay surface. Special inspection is mandatory after gale, storm surge or large‑vessel mooring events.

 

2.Monthly check: Monitor fastener corrosion; re‑verify bolt torque; inspect concrete cracking around foundation.

 

3.Quarterly maintenance: Retorque anchor bolts in diagonal sequence; touch‑up damaged anti‑corrosion paint coating.

 

4.Annual full inspection: Focus on high‑stress fillet transition zone between column and base flange for fatigue cracks; survey anchor bolt corrosion status and quay concrete condition.

 

5.Shorten inspection interval to every two months for heavy salt‑spray coastal locations.
